Someone appears in a man's life as he is transitioning through adversity, apparently to help or guide. But as the relationship evolves he discovers that this guide is actually trying to manipulate his future for her own purposes. So upon this realization, he sarcastically thanks her for "revealing to me the meaning of my life, I'm sure I couldn't have found it by myself".
